PARRIS ISLAND, S.C. -- The Parris Island Library will raise a Heroes’ Tree, Sept. 26, in honor active and veteran service members close to depot personnel.

The Our Heroes’ Tree Program, which began in 2005, is a tribute that originally started in Illinois with the white lights and yellow ribbons, said Rose Krauss, Librarian for the Marine Corps Air Station and Parris Island libraries.

The program was designed to promote awareness of the service and sarifice service members and their families give to keep the country safe, whether they are active duty, guard, reserve or retired, said Marlene Lee, founder of the program. It is more than a tree of ornaments with pictures.

Lee said there are three reasons for the program: to promote awareness, connect military families and the communities around them and to promote patriotism for citizens across the country regardless of connection to the military.

Above all else, Lee said she wants people to reflect, remember and rejoice in the support each community.

Along with the library staff putting up the picture, the Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort Library will hold a craft day 2 p.m., Sept. 24. The Parris Island Library will hold a craft day 2 p.m., Sept. 25.

Craft day is designed to encourage children to bring pictures of service members who are part of or friends of their families, said Donna Humphrys, a library staff member.

“Crafts will jumpstart it, but everyone is welcome to bring a picture,” Humphrys said.

Both Our Heroes’ Trees will be up until November, when it is replaced for a festive holiday tree, said Krauss. Children can bring their ornament home when the tree is taken down.

Across the country, Our Heroes’ Trees have been raised, including state houses, universities and even overseas on military bases in Germany. Anyone can contact the program to start the tradition.

“We want every Marine to bring in a picture,” Krauss said. “Anyone who wears a uniform or served our country is a hero to us.”
