PARRIS ISLAND, S.C. -- A funeral service held Wednesday, Sept. 14, paid tribute to the late depot mascot Sgt. Archibald Hummer, an English bulldog.
After serving five and a half years as the face of Parris Island, longer than any mascot here in the last 20 years, Hummer died in his sleep, Sept. 7. His funeral service was well attended, and Col. Brian T. Palmer remarked that Hummer was the depot’s most popular Marine.
“You won’t see visitors or Marines trying to get a picture with me on family day,” said Palmer, the commanding officer of Headquarters and Service Battalion. “But they were lining up to take their picture with Hummer.”
Palmer said while some may find it silly to hold a funeral for a dog, the mascot worked hard, served as Marines do and deserved the honor.
A small ensemble from the Parris Island Marine Band performed Amazing Grace and a somber Marines’ Hymn to conclude the ceremony.
Cmdr. Curtis Price, battalion chaplain, offered the invocation. Knowing about Hummer’s affinity for attacking traffic cones at field meets, Price said “may his eternity be filled with traffic cones, tug-a-wars and lots of doggie treats.”
