    II Marine Expeditionary Force

MARINE CORPS AIR STATION CHERRY POINT, N.C. - After a month of intense classes 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing intelligence students graduated from the inaugural AV-8B Harrier Squadron Intelligence Course Sept. 2.

The course was pioneered by Capt. Troy Klabo, 2nd MAW intelligence operations officer and director of the class, to help bridge the gap between 2nd MAW intelligence units and Marine Attack Squadrons.

Klabo explained the course provides a baseline of knowledge required by intelligence personnel to best support aviation operations at the squadron level. The course was specifically for AV-8B Harrier squadrons.

The courses will help in two ways, explained 1st Lt. Thomas Crum, the primary instructor of the squadron intelligence course. First, the students gain knowledge they will need to succeed while serving as intelligence specialists for the squadron. Second, the students and aviators can benefit from closer interaction and practicing proper procedures.

“I was proud of the students for how far they had come in understanding the big picture of aviation intelligence,” said Crum.
During the course, Marines learned about the six functions of Marine aviation, various aircraft systems, ordnance, and employment. The students also received AV-8B Harrier hands on training and got an in-depth explanation of the weapons systems for the attack fighter jet.

At the closure of the course the students were provided training certificates signed by Maj. Gen. Jon M. Davis, commanding general of 2nd MAW.

“I feel pride and honor for each student and for how far they have come,” said Klabo. “I look forward to the next iteration of the squadron intelligence course. The staff did a great job putting the course together, but we are a long way from perfect and have a short time to make adjustments.”

The next course is scheduled for February 2012.
