SOUTHWEST ASIA -- Building up a base is an involved process; first comes an airfield and communication, then food and water and so on. It may take some time before all the amenities are operational.
Despite the circumstances, however, Airmen are still required to maintain dress and appearance standards; and at an undisclosed location in Southwest Asia, Airmen saw the need for a barber shop.
What they got was a facility that used to be a self-help laundry room, but is no longer needed because washers and dryers were installed in living quarters.
Within 72 hours, the building where service members once washed their clothes was transformed into a barber shop by the 332nd Expeditionary Civil Engineer Squadron and ready for the first customer, Sept. 12.
"The 332nd ECES did most of the heavy lifting to make this project work," said Capt. Daryl Hebert, 332nd Expeditionary Force Support Squadron deputy commander, who is deployed from Spangdahlem, Germany.
Building the barber shop was a combined effort.
"Different shops such as plumbing, structures and electrical all had to come together to make this happen," said Master Sgt. Joseph Wyen, 332nd ECES Utilities NCO in charge.
A group of stylists working at other bases in the area arrived to a freshly renovated barber shop to unpack and begin the daily business of haircuts for the individuals on base. The Army and Air Force Exchange Service coordinated hiring stylists and ordering equipment.
The first customer in the chair was Staff Sgt. Jacy Morey, 332 ECES Force Protection, who is deployed from Lajes Field, Azores, Portugal.
"I have never seen a barber shop set up before this," said Morey, whose hometown is San Diego, Calif., "It was an interesting process to be involved in while setting up a base."
Building a barber shop in 72 hours is just one of the multiple projects the 332nd ECES has completed to aid in the successful stand up at this undisclosed location in Southwest Asia.
