PARRIS ISLAND, S.C. - The Legends at Parris Island golf course played host to the All-Marine Golf Team tournament Sept. 19-24.
Thirty-seven Marines stationed across the globe traveled to Beaufort to take part in the two practice days on the depot, said Andy Hinson, professional adviser for Legends and coach for the Marine team.
Parris Island was chosen for the tournament for two reasons, said Hinson. The first is the location—Legends is the closest golf course to Fort Jackson in Columbia, S.C., where the Armed Forces Golf Tournament will be held.
The second is the quality of the location, he added. The Legends at Parris Island is a well-kept course.
During their time, each golfer played an 18-hole game on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Hinson said. The scores of each day were collected to determine the new team.
Out of the 37 participants, six players from bases all across the United States made the team.
The winners were Staff Sgt. Ryan Pippin from Parris Island; Cpl. Austin Grey from Twentynine Palms, Calif.; Capt. David King from Naval Station Norfolk, Va.; Staff Sgt. Aubrey Evans from Camp Lejeune, N.C.; 1st Lt. Todd Collins from Camp Pendleton, Calif.; and Chief Warrant Officer 4 Shane Studer from Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, N.C.
Hinson said he values these players for their abilities to perform under pressure and win in competition.
Hinson, who has coached the team for the past five years, said the recent groups of Marines have performed well, including the 2009 competition held at Camp Pendleton, Calif., where they placed second.
