Task Force Hammer
TALLIL, IRAQ - Since the dawn of the modern military age, armies have conducted formal procedures to mark major victories, honor fallen brothers, and commemorate special occasions. A bright blue morning sky over Tallil, Iraq witnessed one such special occasion.
A transfer of authority ceremony took place Sept. 19 as the soldiers of the 16th Corps Support Group, 3rd Corps Support Command were succeeded by the Paratroopers of the 82nd Sustainment Brigade, 82nd Airborne Division at Camp Adder on Tallil Airbase in Iraq.
The Paratroopers of the 82nd Sustainment Brigade will be operating out of Camp Adder for the next year to support the counterinsurgency operations of the Iraqi security forces as well as the coalitions soldiers engaged in Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Col. Stephen R. Lyons, commander of the 82nd Sustainment Brigade reminded his Paratroopers about the mission they have trained so long and hard for.
"Today, we enter the next chapter in the Global War on Terror, in order to extend peace and freedom around the world," he said.
Lyons also extended his appreciation to Col. Victor Maccagnan, Jr., commander of the outgoing 16th CSG.
"You and your team have touched the hearts and souls of thousands of men and women the past year. The investments you made will continue as they take what you have taught them and make our world, and our Army, a better place," Lyons said.
The 16th CSG's meritorious service stretched from Oct. 5, 2005 until Sept. 19, 2006. Among their numerous tasks during this time, they executed over 1,500 sustainment convoys throughout the multi-national corps area of Iraq. These convoys provided over two-hundred and fifty-million gallons of fuel, one million cases of bottled water and sixty-million gallons of purified water to the multinational forces.
Maccagnan voiced his confidence in the legacy and the ability of the 82nd Airborne Division to carry on and get the job done.
"The patch the Paratroopers of the 82nd wear on their shoulder has been casting fear into the hearts of America's enemies for nearly 100 years," he said.
The double-A symbol also brings the assurance of excellence, he continued.
"I am personally honored to have the distinction of being relieved by these fine troopers, for I know their legacy, their history and their brilliance. You will surely be awed and are certain to sleep well, for the 82nd is on point," Maccagnan said.
