ZABUL PROVINCE, Afghanistan – Members of Combined Team Zabul, including soldiers from the Virginia Army National Guard 116th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, enjoyed a rare treat Oct. 8 when Static Line, the 82nd Airborne Division’s rock band, performed a live concert in the dining facility during dinner chow at Forward Operating Base Lagman.
“We deploy to entertain troops, and we go wherever we need to go to do that,” said Sgt. John W. Robertson, a soldier from San Antonio, Texas, and one of the band’s guitar players. “Anywhere we get to play is good.”
The band played everything from classic oldies to modern rock, and by the end of the first set, people were singing along and dancing in their seats.
“They can come any time they want to,” said Sgt. First Class Elizabeth Jackson, from Lynchburg, Va. “I love them.”
As the crowd warmed up, the stresses of daily life in a combat zone seemed to melt away.
“Music provides a sense of escape,” said Robertson. “There are a lot of tough things that troops on the ground are having to deal with, and an hour, 30 minutes away from their day-to-day job I think really helps.”
The rock band is just one of several small groups from the 82nd Airborne Division Band that tours Regional Command South playing for troops in the field.
