CAMP LEATHERNECK, Afghanistan - The 375th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, Task Force Resolute assumed control of the sustainment mission in Regional Command Southwest from the 129th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion during a transfer of authority ceremony at Camp Leatherneck, Oct. 12.
The ceremony commenced in a traditional military fashion, with Lt. Col. Daniel K. Rickleff and Command Sgt. Maj. John Seelhorst, the 129th CSSB commander and command sergeant major, respectively, casing the battalion colors to signify the completion of their mission. Next, Lt. Col. Edwin Lugo and Command Sgt. Maj. Scherr Qualls called forward and uncased their own colors, symbolizing their assumption of the mission.
The 375th CSSB are now responsible for all sustainment operations in support of the Marines based at Camp Leatherneck.
This includes managing a central receiving and shipping point, moving supplies throughout the southwest region of Afghanistan, supporting a supply support activity warehouse and coordinating delivery of fuel, ammunition, water and food to forward operating soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines.
“The day we have been training for is finally here, we have our mission,” said Lt. Col. Edwin F. Lugo, the 375th CSSB commander. “The 129th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion did an outstanding job during their tenure and we have some big shoes to fill.”
The 129th CSSB legacy in the southwest region of Afghanistan is built around their impact on the mission. During their deployment they convoyed critical supplies up dangerous routes to Forward Operating Bases Edinburgh, Musa Qala, Shagazi, Shukvani and Nolay in the volatile Northern Helmand River Valley. They trained Afghan soldiers on basic sustainment operations and drivers training while working to expand the Afghan Trucking Network, said Col. Lawrence Kominiak, the TF-Resolute commander.
“The soldiers of the 129th [Combat Sustainment Support Battalion] can certainly be proud of their unit and the legacy they left behind,” Kominiak said. “Afghanistan is truly better off because of their efforts.”
The soldiers of the 129th CSSB will redeploy to Fort Campbell, Ky. After the ceremony, Rickleff reflected on his battalion’s deployment.
“Our true legacy was in setting our replacements up for success,” he said. “We performed the mission as best we could and now we are passing it on to them.”
