SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. -- Capt. Manuela Peters captured the second place trophy in her first appearance in the 2011 Air Mobility “Icon” competition here, Oct. 20.
Peters, a KC-135 Stratotanker pilot from the 93rd Air Refueling Squadron at Fairchild AFB, Wash., sang “Defying Gravity.” It's a song recorded by Idina Menzel that Peters said she found “inspiring.” To place in the Icon finals, she added, was also special.
“This is an awesome experience,” Peters said. “To have this fantastic opportunity to sing with a live band and be a part of it all was nice. I love to sing...this offered an opportunity to do something artistic and have fun.”
The 2011 edition of AMC Icon took place at the Scott Club. The competition is based loosely on the television show “American Idol.”
According to Sam Parker, from the Manpower, Personnel and Services Directorate (A1) at AMC Headquarters who organized the competition the last four years, Icon is an AMC commander's initiative to showcase the vocal talents of AMC airmen.
Each AMC base holds Icon contests in July and August to determine their representatives for the command final which takes place at Scott AFB.
Conrad received $600 and a trophy for her Icon placing.
