CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. – A Pittsburgh, Pa., native was recognized as the Marine Corps Installations East SACO of the Year award Oct. 25, 2011.
Staff Sgt. William J. Hermann, a substance abuse control officer with Combat Logistics Regiment 27, 2nd Marine Logistics Group, was honored with the award for his dedication to his work, and though he takes his job serious, that wasn’t always the case, Hermann explains.
“When I was first told that I was going to be the SACO I wasn’t too happy about it,” he said. “I didn’t like the idea of having to do urinalysis every day.”
As he began his time as the SACO for the regiment it was apparent he didn’t know what to expect; however, he quickly learned there was more to it than just taking urinalysis.
“As I kept working and learned more about what I was doing, I began to enjoy it a lot more,” Hermann said. “I began to realize that people doing this job really help Marines, not catch them. Marines can come to us for help with their drug and alcohol abuse problems. Working with them is the best part of the job.”
Hermann earned this award as he says goodbye to the SACO field and enters a new chapter in his career. He will be reporting Marine Corps Security Guard Battalion aboard Quantico, Va., to begin training for MSG duty. It’s something he’s wanted to do for a long time.
“I’m excited about this opportunity,” Hermann said. “I’ve wanted to do a B-billet, and being a military policeman by trade; naturally, I wanted to do MSG duty.”
It’s an opportunity he doesn’t take lightly. He’ll take on the challenge with someone in mind, he said.
“My dad was a big influence on a lot of the things I’ve done thus far,” Hermann said. “He wanted to join the Marine Corps back in his day, but he couldn’t because of an ailment. That’s the reason I joined.”
The 14-year veteran isn’t ready to call it quits, he mentioned, and though he will be leaving the unit for a new journey, Hermann still keeps working with his fellow SACOs’ at the regiment and proves that his award wasn’t luck, but skill.
