MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP S. D. BUTLER, OKINAWA, Japan - Japan Minister of Defense Yasuo Ichikawa toured and made courtesy calls to Marine Corps camps Kinser, Foster and Lester and to Marine Corps Air Station Futenma on Okinawa Nov. 12.
Ichikawa was greeted at Camp Kinser by Col. John E. Kasperski, Camp Kinser camp commander, and Paul E. Newman, deputy camp commander, and then received a brief about the Naha Military Port relocation and west coast development projects by the Okinawa Defense Bureau.
At MCAS Futenma, Col. James G. Flynn, MCAS Futenma commanding officer, presented a command brief to Ichikawa at the Headquarters Building. Ichikawa received a second brief about air operations in the air traffic control tower.
Ichikawa made a courtesy call to Maj. Gen. William D. Beydler, acting Okinawa-area coordinator and commanding general of 1st Marine Aircraft Wing, at Building 1, Camp Foster.
The purpose of the visit was to observe the current situation of the facilities through tours of the camps and to make courtesy calls to the acting Okinawa-area coordinator and the base commander of MCAS Futenma.
