MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. – Cpl. Darrell Kincaid does not eat meat.

Kincaid, a rifleman with Charlie Company, 1st Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment stands 5’10” and weighs around 155 pounds. Three years ago, before he joined the Marine Corps he said he weighed more than 230 pounds.

The Victor, W.Va., native said he joined the Marine Corps after stopping by the recruiting office on his way home from work.

“My life really wasn’t going anywhere. I was just working at a coal mine back home,” he said. “One day after work I drove by it and decided to stop in, and they told me what they had to offer.”

But before he could press forward with joining the Marines he needed to drop weight.

Kincaid said he attributes his weight loss to a combination of the physical fitness mindset instilled by the Marine Corps and a vegetarian diet.

“Usually every morning for [physical training], I’m one of the fittest. I can go forever, it’s a good feeling,” he said.

Kincaid grew up on a Black Angus cattle farm and says he plans to go back there and return to eating meat… when he’s finished with the Marine Corps.

Kincaid is currently training as part of the Battalion Landing Team for the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit, which is scheduled to deploy early next year.
