WASHINGTON - A native of Killeen was promoted to the rank of corporal in the United Stated Marine Corps Dec. 1.
Cpl. David Davis, 23, enlisted in the Marine Corps Dec. 16, 2008, and attended recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego. Davis was stationed at Camp Fuji, Japan after recruit training. He has served as an administrative clerk at Marine Barracks Washington since July 11, 2010.
The rank of corporal is the first noncommissioned officer rank in the Corps, and is an important rank of leadership. NCO’s obtain their position of authority by promotion through the enlisted ranks.
“It’s a great honor to earn the title of NCO, and it comes with high responsibility,” Davis said. “I represent Killeen every day, and my only wish is to make them proud, and today I have done that.”
While stationed at the Barracks, Davis is responsible for ensuring the Marines here receive proper pay each week. He also aids Marines with their transition back into the civilian world.
His awards include a Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, a Navy Unit Citation, a National Defense Service Medal, a Global War on Terrorism Medal and an Overseas Service Ribbon.
Davis plans to leave the Marine Corps when his enlistment is over in Dec. 2012, and attend college in Texas.
Barracks Marines support ceremonial and security missions in the nation’s capitol. Each year, the Marines support more than 30 parades and hundreds of ceremonies and functions to include funerals and sporting events across the country and globe while maintaining proficiency in their respective military occupational specialties and meeting their annual Marine Corps training requirements.
