MARINE CORPS AIR STATION MIRAMAR, Calif. - Evaluators visited Gonzales Hall aboard Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, Calif., for the Maj. Gen. W.P.T. Hill Award for Food Service Excellence competition Dec. 5.
Two Marines and one civilian, representing the National Restaurant Association, inspected Gonzales Hall in addition to 10 other Marine Corps dining facilities across the nation and overseas.
“We’ve done a lot … from attention to detail, to trying to make this a comfortable, relaxing place for Marines when they come to eat here,” said San Antonio native Maj. Jerry Brown, the deputy director of logistics and officer-in-charge at Gonzales Hall.
Judges evaluate everything from menus, nutrition, cooking techniques and team work to the way the grounds are kept and the theme of the establishment.
“Whether you’re wearing a blue Sodexo uniform or you’re wearing [camouflage utilities, it’s] one fight one team,” said Master Sgt. Ricardo Rivera, a food service technician at Gonzales Hall and a Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico, native. “We work together to accomplish a common goal.”
The service “family” at Gonzales Hall has approximately 80 Marines and civilians working to ensure every Marine walking through the doors is able to relax and enjoy the meals.
Gonzales Hall competitors will find out the results as soon as all the competing mess halls have been judged. The Miramar team hopes they can bring the award back this year after winning in 2002 and being nominated again in 2008.
