QALA-I-NAW, Afghanistan – Coinciding with the celebration of the Immaculate Conception, Patroness of the Infantry, force largest branch, the base of the Provincial Reconstruction Team in Qala-i-Naw, paused in their daily activity for the imposition of the NATO medal "No Article 5 ISAF" to about 500 members of ASPFOR XXIX, deployed in the Badghis province of Spanish responsibility.
The ceremony was chaired by Col. Felix Cortijo Eugenio García, Head of the Spanish contingent, and it took place at the Base "Ruy Gonzalez de Clavijo" parade ground, main operations centre of the Spanish forces stationed in Afghanistan.
The first act of the ceremony was the reading of the award of Distinction in the General Order to the national interpreter Afsaneh Khalighy Khalighy by the events of the last September 5, 2009 where, under insurgent fire and demonstrating great courage and serenity, his intervention was decisive in encouraging the performance of an Afghan National Army Unit.
Subsequently, colonel, the force commander, imposed medals to the Unit Commanders, and they, in turn, to their respective Units.
Then paid tribute to the fallen with a very special remembering to Sgt. 1st Class Joaquín Moya Espejo killed in action last November 6th, ending the act, after singing the Infantry hymn, with the parade of the participating Units.
The feast of the Infantry Patroness ended with a brotherhood lunch for all the components of the contingent where the Cortijo congratulated to the interpreter Afsaneh for her job, and extended it "to all those who, over the years have been and still are, our ears and our voice in these lands."
Quota-generating Units to ASPFOR XXIX are Mountain Troops Headquarters "Aragon" and the Light Infantry Brigade "San Marcial" V being the Mountain Hunters Regiment "America 66" its base Unit.
