FORT STEWART, Ga. – The Hinesville and Fort Stewart communities remembered Pearl Harbor Day, Dec. 10, at American Legion Post 168 on Oglethorpe Highway.
The ceremony, which marked the 70th anniversary of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Dec. 7, 1941, was sponsored by Chapter 46 of the Disabled American Veterans. Students from the Bradwell Institute’s Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps provided a color guard and helped the veterans set up the event.
“Today we come together to pay tribute to the more than 2,400 who fell that day, … to those who recall the last moments of peace, the first horrors of war, and the faces of their fallen friends,” said Lt. Col. Gregory Bell, commander of 3rd Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, and the keynote speaker for the event.
“We also recognize the thousands of stories that will never be told, the letters home never finished, the deck watches never turned over, [and] the homecomings never enjoyed,” Bell said.
During his speech, Bell asked the veterans and members of the community to stand and applaud a World War II veteran who attended the remembrance.
“Know that by your presence you honor all who have served, those who cannot be here, those who have passed on and especially those who did not survive the day of infamy,” Bell told the veteran. “Your presence honors every act of bravery.”
The ceremony, which is held annually, concluded with five tolls of a bell—once for each year the U.S. fought in World War II—and the playing of Taps.
