CAMP ADDER, Iraq - Even though troopers of the 180th Cavalry were away from their friends and families this year, they were still able to enjoy Thanksgiving. At Camp Beuhring, Kuwait, the dining facilities were decorated with fall decorations, streamers and even large ice sculptures to help soldiers celebrate the day.

The Thanksgiving meal was hosted during the normal lunchtime hours, but was served by senior officers and sergeants major instead of the usual staff. Lt. Chris Chomosh, commander of the 180th, and Command Sgt. Maj. Brian Miller took turns serving soldiers before enjoying a meal themselves. Servings included the full spectrum of turkey, ham and even roast beef, as well as all the traditional side dishes. A live band was also on hand at one of the dining facilities to provide music during the mealtime hours.

But not all of the soldiers of the 180th were able to attend this celebration. Several soldiers assigned to HHT spent the holiday in Camp Adder, Iraq, a camp north of the Kuwait-Iraq border. The soldiers had left the day before to conduct a convoy escort mission in the continuing effort to withdraw US forces from Iraq by the end of December. The fact that they were in Iraq didn’t prevent them from having their own Thanksgiving meal, however. The soldiers brought a small barbecue grill, as well as burgers and hot dogs, just for the occasion. The soldiers lit up the grill and had their own private little celebration, exhibiting the undying spirit of the American soldier.

Maj. Michael Dale, squadron operations officer, accompanied the mission. He had the privilege of attending the Thanksgiving cookout, saying, “Sometimes the mission takes you away from your family and friends, and in this case, the duties as part of a convoy escort team required us to be in Iraq on Thanksgiving Day. We did not get the chance to feast on turkey that day like a lot of other soldiers, but the [non-commissioned officers] did a great job of cooking up hamburgers out of the back of one of the Caiman vehicles. It was a very memorable day-last Thanksgiving in Iraq 1-180 CAV style.”
