    Defense Logistics Agency

For most of the past seven months, a 26-year Defense Logistics Agency Troop Support employee from the clothing and textiles supply chain conducted her work from an Army forward operating base in Afghanistan.

Sue Pinto said she felt a personal obligation to help U.S. warfighters complete their mission in Afghanistan successfully.

“I just wanted to go there and take care of my troops until we get them back home safe,” she said.

From Afghanistan, Pinto ordered ground vehicle and helicopter replacement parts from DLA Land and Maritime and the General Services Administration, generators from the U.S. Army TACOM Life Cycle Management Command, tents from DLA Troop Support and vehicle fuel from DLA Energy, among many other things. She said that near the end of her DLA contingency support team deployment, purchases she made were mostly food, water and vehicle fuel.

Her duties also often included ordering helium, aircraft strip landing lights and power washers for helicopters. The power washers, were needed to keep helicopters functional in in the extremely dusty operating conditions, she said.

The biggest difference between doing DLA Contingency Support Team-Afghanistan ordering and logistics work versus doing it for DLA Troop Support in Philadelphia was transportation time for supplies, Pinto said.

“Items ordered from Philadelphia and going to locations in the United States usually take three to five days from order to receipt,” she said. “From Afghanistan, it’s more likely to be seven to 45 days.”

Pinto completed a previous DCST tour of similar length in Afghanistan during 2010.

“Sue Pinto has really shown a passion for this kind of work,” David James, chief of the Air Force, Coast Guard and military clothing sales stores branch at DLA Troop Support’s clothing and textiles branch and Pinto’s supervisor, said. “She fully understood she would be living in rough conditions and volunteered anyway.”

In her spare time, Pinto cares for her three grandchildren and does professional floral design. She has been chairwoman of the Troop Support Federal Women’s Program for three of the past four years. The group selected her as Philadelphia Chapter ‘Woman of the Year’ in 2009.

DLA contingency support teams place civilians, active-duty military and reservists in contingency situations under ultimate command of theater commanders. These teams provide logistical support in regional conflicts and emergencies, among other situations.
