Hockey comes to the 1-94 Cavalry

CAMP BUEHRING, Kuwait - To some Minnesotans, hockey is not a sport, it’s a way of life. This could never be truer than for Sgt. Timothy House of Crazy Troop, 1st Squadron, 94th Cavalry, who has taken it upon himself to start a hockey league for the 1-94 Cavalry.

House, who hails from Duluth, Minn., has helped bring a little bit of home to Kuwait by setting up the league. The squadron already has eight teams, with six to ten players on each team, with soldiers representing all units in the squadron.

“We had a lot of guys who really want to play hockey, so I stepped up to start the league,” said House

The soldiers set up walls around the Armor of God to create a makeshift rink to play on. After it was completed, the soldiers began to play some hockey. They bolted up and down the Armor of God, laughing and playing the sport they love so much.

“Seeing everyone having a good time is rewarding,” said House after the Tuesday night exhibition game. He continued on to say, “Nothing beats the workout you get from ... hockey. It’s much more fun to play hockey than going for a run.”

For Cpl. Christopher Mitchell of Elk River, Minn., playing hockey brings him a little closer to home. “Being able to relax and play hockey brings me back to Minnesota and motivates me to keep working hard over here,” he said.

Mitchell plays for Able Troop’s team “Wolf Pack,” which will be participating along with House and Crazy Troop’s team “Yellow” in hockey day at Camp Buehring, Jan. 21.

When asked about how hockey has affected his life, House said, “I owe a lot to the sport. It's one of those games that gives you a lot as an individual.”

House finished by saying, “You learn teamwork and camaraderie from hockey. It can teach you life lessons, and it is something enjoyable you can pass on to your family and friends.”
