Marines and sailors with 1st Air Naval Gunfire Liaison Company conducted a tactical air control party shoot, Jan. 19.
The 1st ANGLICO team members called in air support during the exercise to re-qualify as joint terminal attack controllers and to maintain proficiency in their ability to provide air support.
“We just returned from a seven-month deployment to Afghanistan, so we are kind of breaking the rust off and getting back in the training mode,” said Capt. Joseph Hamilton, the officer in charge of Supporting Arms Liaison Team Bravo. “This close air support shoot helps us get back to the basics.”
The Marines and sailors with 1st ANGLICO recently returned from a deployment and are training to maintain their skills current for future deployments. Hamilton, who worked with the Georgian Liaison Team in Afghanistan, called in a successful airstrike during the training.
“It’s kind of like our rifle range,” said Hamilton, 30, from Baltimore. “You go to the range to re-qualify and remember how to use your weapon. We are back in the training mindset to prepare for deployments in the future.”
ANGLICO acts as a liaison to troops partnered with the U.S. military. During their last deployment, 1st ANGLICO worked with the Afghan National Army, the British Royal Army and several other units from various nations.
“We are usually sent out with foreign units,” said Cpl. Dimauro Andrew, a radio operator with 1st ANGLICO. “We follow under them, go on their patrols and follow their standard operating procedures. We are their means of fire because a lot of the time they don’t have their own joint tactical air controllers and it is our responsibility to fill that role for them.”
The officers re-qualify as JTAC semiannually to provide the most efficient support possible in a combat environment.
“The officers re-certify every six months,” said Andrew, 21, from Avon, Conn. “They are also out here to sharpen their skills and keep them on top.”
The 1st ANGLICO teams have supported U.S. efforts with foreign countries since 1949. Although 1st and 2nd ANGLICO were disbanded in 1999, they re-activated service in 2003 to join combat operations in Iraq and continued the fight in Afghanistan in 2008.
“ANGLICO has a lot to offer because we work with foreign units,” Hamilton said. “In the Global War on Terror we are going to need everybody’s assistance and we can provide air support to foreign nations if they need it."
