CAMP ARIFJAN, Kuwait – The 402nd Army Field Support Brigade recently issued theater provided equipment to 2nd Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division to conduct training operations in Kuwait Jan. 17 – 20.

The 402nd AFSB is one of two support brigades in central command that is responsible for storage, maintenance, accountability and issuing of equipment to heavy brigade and infantry brigade combat teams. In addition, the 402nd AFSB conducted retrograde operations for equipment repositioned from Iraq for Army Materiel Command and provided theater support rolling and non-rolling stock to Third Army.

The mission outfitting units with the proper TPE from prepositioned stock is an important one.

“It provides a strategic option for the Third Army/ARCENT commander, as well as national command authority,” said Lt. Col. Kenneth Gill, 402nd AFSB commander. “We have equipment prepositioned here which allows soldiers to come from different regions of the world to have equipment to conduct their missions.”

Currently, the 402nd AFSB is focused on 1st BCT, 1st Cavalry, which recently relocated from Iraq. The unit’s equipment draw was a significant one, said Gill.

“This was the first time we issued a brigade combat team equipment from our system since 2007,” said Gill. “It was a great opportunity to provide these units with the equipment needed to conduct training operations.”

The 2nd Battalion, 8th Cavalry soldiers received more than 3,000 items, Gill stated. Some of the issued equipment includes M2 .50-caliber machine guns, Bradley Fighting Vehicles and M1A2 Abrams Tanks.

In one week’s time, convoys delivered the equipment to 2nd Bn. 8th Cavalry soldiers at Camp Buehring, Kuwait.

“It feels good to be in tanks again and operating in our conventional environment,” said 1st Lt. Eric Murrell, platoon leader, 2nd Battalion, 8th Cavalry, and Greeneville, S.C., native. “Now we can begin training on small arms and gunnery ranges with our Bradley and Abrams tanks.”

The 2nd Battalion, 8th Cavalry soldiers will be able to conduct training exercises with the recently issued equipment.

“As part of the reposturing and repositioning of troops, we will be able to conduct joint training with other countries in the ARCENT’s area of responsibility,” Murrell said.

Third Army is transitioning for tomorrow by ensuring the transfer of equipment to goes smoothly and efficiently.
