CAMP TAJI, Iraq – Two Fort Hood-based aviation battalions changed places here after an overlap period where the two battalions worked side-by-side.

Soldiers of 3rd Battalion, 227th Aviation Regiment, 1st Air Cavalry Brigade, shadowed Soldiers from 3rd Battalion, 4th Aviation Regiment, Combat Aviation Brigade, to learn more about their mission in Iraq during a process called relief-in-place, said Carlisle, Pa., native Lt. Col. Michael Shenk, the 3-227th commander.

"[The] Soldiers of 3-4 did a huge amount of homework before this process started. ... They've done a great job of walking all our Soldiers through their responsibilities and duties," said Shenk.

The transition was a smooth process, said Odessa, Texas, native Sgt. 1st Class Jimmy Zednick, the production control noncommissioned officer in charge assigned to Company D, 3-4.

"[The 3-4 Soldiers] help out a lot. They tell us what we need to know to help make our tour here easier," said Sgt. Juan Martinez from Lockhart, Texas, assigned to Company C, 3-227th.

With the RIP complete, 3-227th assumed authority of the mission from 3-4 Nov. 15.

"[Third] battalion has pumped out the most hours of any battalion in [the Combat] Aviation Brigade. They've definitely earned their money. We're just hoping to fill their big shoes," said Shenk.

The uncasing of the colors, a ceremony that solidifies the transfer of authority from 3-4 to 3-227th will take place in the near future.
