FORWARD OPERATING BASE DELARAM II, Afghanistan - This year, the Marines, sailors and other service members aboard Forward Operating Base Delaram II, Afghanistan, received the special opportunity to enjoy one of America’s favorite events.

At 4 a.m., they gathered inside of the giant tent which is their dining facility to watch the face-off between the New England Patriots and the New York Giants.

The NFL Super Bowl is watched by millions in America every year. Even being deployed didn’t stop fans from walking in the cold winter morning hours of Afghanistan and making their way to the dining facility to catch the big game.

“This was a great privilege and I’m real thankful to those who provided it,” said Lance Cpl. Simon Van Osch, MUX operator, 19, from South Orange, N.J. “I figured they’d find a way to let us watch the Super Bowl out here.”

When the dining facility opened its doors, it offered a Super Bowl style menu to the zealous fans. The Marines and sailors got to enjoy the finger foods many of their friends and relatives would be gorging on back in the U.S. as they watched the big game.

“The food is delicious,” Van Osch added.

“It reminds me of home and watching past Super Bowls there. Very rarely do we get to eat mozzarella sticks, chicken wings and stuff like that here,” he continued with a huge smile as the Giants made a touchdown.

Van Osch was so determined to watch the game that he went to the dining facility after have stood a four-hour watch post that morning.

“My favorite part is just being able to come together with everyone here just to watch the Super Bowl,” he added.

Many of the Marines were extremely grateful for the chance to watch the Super Bowl live on the two TVs set up for them in the back of the facility by fellow communications Marines.

“I’m real thankful for the workers who got up so early here to cook, set up and do everything to make this a good Super Bowl experience,” said Sgt. Rolando Ventura, 25, non-commissioned officer in charge, S-1, from Brentwood, N.Y.

“It’s amazing we got to watch it all the way out here in the middle of the desert,” he continued. “We can’t see the actual Super Bowl commercials, but hey, we’re still watching the Super Bowl in Afghanistan, so I have no complaints. I’m a big Giants fan so I would do anything to support my team. Even out here in Afghanistan.”
