    45th Sustainment Brigade

KANDAHAR AIRFIELD, Afghanistan –The 45th Sustainment Brigade officially assumed responsibility for sustainment operations after a transfer of authority ceremony held here in on Kandahar Airfield, Feb. 4.

The ‘Lightning Support’ Brigade, as they are known as, falls under the 8th Theater Sustainment Command and is based out of Schofield Barracks, Hawaii. These soldiers stood in formation ready to take charge and exchanged responsibilities with the 7th Sustainment Brigade, based out of Fort Eustis, Va., marking the second Operation Enduring Freedom rotation for the unit. Their previous OEF deployment came in 2009.

The 45th also made history in 2006 while supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom while deployed to Q-West, becoming the first sustainment brigade to transfer authority to another in the history of the U.S. Army.

The ceremony began with a formation of troops, including the 7th and the 45th Sust. Brigades. The 45th also welcomed their newest additions to the unit, the 1297th Combat Support Sustainment Battalion from Havre de Grace, Md., the 365th CSSB from Jackson Miss, and the 375th CSSB from Mobile, Ala. These units will help with logistical operations for Regional Commands South, Southwest and West.

Following the formation of troops and opening remarks, the Brigade’s colors were uncased by Col. Jeffrey Drushal, brigade commander of the 45th Sustainment Brigade, and Command Sgt. Maj. Roger Bynoe, command sergeant major. This signified the transition of authority.

“This is a moment we have been anticipating for almost a year,” said Drushal. “I do apologize, because as you can see, we could not bring our pleasant Aloha weather with us,” he joked when referring to the big weather change from Hawaii to Afghanistan.

“To our U.S. military, civilian, and ISAF counterparts, we are prepared to sustain the force. The 45th will uphold its tradition of sustaining the fight which stretches all the way back to 1936. We will not disappoint you. God Bless the 45th Sustainment Brigade, the U.S. Army, and God Bless America. Lightning Support.”
