CAMP BUEHRING, Kuwait - Charlie Company, 1/34 Brigade Special Troops Battalion, attached to 1st Squadron, 94th Cavalry, visited Personal Security Detail Range 5, where they participated in personal security training. The training allowed soldiers to build up to protecting the principle over a three-day course.
Soldiers perform leap and bounding movements on day one. Soldiers of Charlie Company were taught how to use leap and bounding techniques to move toward or away from enemy fire.
Spc. Curt Madsen enjoyed the ability to move and fire live ammo on the range. He said, “It felt like we finally trained on a range as we fight. This range was a great experience.”
On the second day, the soldiers practiced clearing and securing a building.
“Clearing a house with live ammo is a rush. It allows us to fire our weapons in close quarters,” said Staff Sgt. Darren Carrigan.
Day three pulled all the training together. Soldiers were required to move a principle from a podium, to a vehicle, to the safe house, as each level of training intensifies. The principle is targeted and needs to be protected from enemy and encountering improvised explosive devices.
Each team member grew more familiar with their assignments.
During the dry run each soldier is calling out distance, direction and the description of enemy contact.
During the engagement small details are being reviewed, how fast to walk, adjusting protection distance, how long to engage before breaking contact and movement speed. Suppressive fire during enemy contact, moving the VIP under fire, extraction and a rally point is all key to the training.
Spc. Nicholas Schautz explained that this was his first time at a live-fire mount course, "I learned something new, and this is a new experience.”
