CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. - Naval Facilities Engineering Command Mid-Atlantic announced one of Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune's very own their 2012 Engineer of the Year, Jan. 27.
Lt. Cmdr. Jeff Jasinski, executive officer and assistant officer-in-charge of the Officer in Charge of Construction, Marine Corps Installations East, was selected for the prestigious award.
"I was nominated by my commander within NAVFAC Mid-Atlantic for the engineer of the year on the military side of the house," said Jasinski. "Ultimately, what the intent is, is a national society of professional engineers will select one engineer of the year from all services."
Jasinski is responsible for the leadership, management and administration of a 110-person command of engineers, engineering technicians and contract specialists. As construction manager, he oversaw the construction of a multi-story outpatient addition to Naval Hospital Camp Lejeune, serving 140,000 active-duty military, dependents and retirees.
He also leads a 16-person engineering cell established to strategically manage, analyze and optimize construction execution for the $3.5 billion Grow the Force and bachelor quarters construction programs.
"(I was) just surprised to have been singled out, knowing how many outstanding folks I work around and with every day," said Jasinski. "I think it is a great example of the opportunity and responsibility we are offered as (Department of Defense) engineers."
While attached to the Detachment Civil Action Team Guam as the officer-in-charge, he skillfully directed and managed 78 multiservice remotely deployed engineers and 30 local national apprentices, executing more than 60,000 man-days of construction, training, medical assistance and community relation activities.
Though being an outstanding engineer is essential, Jasinski said volunteering is just as important.
"Just before arriving here, I had a lot of involvement in Guam with the Special Olympics. Then, the projects we did on the islands were always involved in community service, whether it was with the kids, training apprentices or medical outreach and, since I've been here, I've done a couple Habitat for Humanity builds," said Jasinski.
He has directed and participated in supporting the villages of Talafofo and Barrigada, Guam and elementary schools and also contributed in cleanups, reading programs, parades and the Red Ribbon program.
Jasinski is a graduate of the University of Rhode Island where he earned both a bachelor's and master's degree in civil engineering. In 1998, he was commissioned into the Navy's Civil Engineer Corps.
