CAMP CARROLL, South Korea - The 501st Sustainment Brigade held a spiritual fitness breakfast, for approximately 200 soldiers, at the recently opened Champion’s Café at Camp Carroll, South Korea, Feb. 9, 2012.

The formal program began with Col. Darrell C. Duckworth, 501st Sustainment Brigade commander, giving the opening remarks, affirming his commitment to spiritual fitness and speaking on the importance of having regular spiritual fitness events.

“We all know how important physical and mental fitness are, but we need to make sure that we also give due attention to the importance of spiritual fitness in each of our lives,” said Duckworth.

The event guest speaker Col. David L. Waters Sr., United States Forces Korea Command chaplain, began with a short time of prayer and special music selections sung by Genie Lee, a local woman who voluntarily leads the Wednesday night worship service.

Using an Old Testament passage, 1 Samuel 15:22-23, Waters explained how even though God himself chose King Saul to be the first king of Israel he ended up losing everything after he was disobedient to the Lord.

Waters encouraged the soldiers to understand that “you can’t make up with sacrifice what you lose through disobedience.”

Event organizer Capt. Vincent Myers, 501st Special Troops Battalion chaplain, said he wanted to say thank you to everyone who helped make the prayer breakfast possible.

“I am grateful to all the support we received from the our command teams, as well as Chaplain Waters taking the time out of his busy schedule to be here,” said Myers. “I hope that the soldiers who attended left with tangible principles for their spiritual resiliency.”

Myers said that he felt that the breakfast was a great success and that the brigade would continue to hold quarterly spiritual fitness breakfasts as well as other spiritual fitness events in the future.
