MARINE CORPS BASE HAWAII, Kaneohe Bay - Families greeted loved ones outside Hangar 103 as Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron Light 37, Detachment 5, returned from a seven-month deployment, Feb. 13.
More than 20 sailors with the detachment spent the deployment
accompanying USS Port Royal in the 5th Fleet area of operations. This area encompasses countries such as Iraq, Afghanistan, Bahrain and Yemen.
While two Easyrider helicopters touched down at Marine Corps Base
Hawaii, the rest of the detachment arrived with USS Port Royal at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam the same morning.
“[The detachment] worked well together as a team with the team
[aboard] USS Port Royal,” said Lt. Cmdr. Joseph Murphy, officer in
charge of HSL-37, Det. 5.
Murphy said the detachment visited several countries including
The Phillippines, Guam, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates.
“We operated with [the] George Bush and Stennis strike groups in
aggregated operations,” Murphy said.
Meanwhile, several wives and girlfriends counted down each day
until the return.
“[They were gone] 234 days,” said Lindsey Magno, without hesitation.
“But who’s counting?” she added, smiling.
The family of Lt. Daniel Robertson was.
Robertson’s wife said the family created a paper chain from which they would remove one link each day while counting down to the homecoming. His daughter also prepared many drawings for her father’s arrival.
As Robertson greeted his family, he also met his youngest son for
the first time, who was born shortly before Thanksgiving last year.
“He’s about what I imagined he would be [except] a little bit longer,” said Robertson, the detachment administration officer.
Although Robertson missed his family and flying over the islands,
he enjoyed being able to fly to an aircraft carrier for the first time,
instead of walking directly on the aircraft carrier, during previous
assignments.
The Easyriders returned just in time for Valentine’s Day. To
mark the occasion, Petty Officer 2nd Class David Dorsey, Naval
aircrewman, for HSL-37 Det. 5, and his girlfriend enjoyed dinner at the restaurant where they had their first date — Yard House.
Although this was Dorsey’s third deployment, it was his first official deployment away from his girlfriend, aside from smaller training exercises. Still, Dorsey said this deployment was a success.
“It was my first time out in the [Arabian] Gulf, [encountering] different cultures,” Dorsey said.
