FORT HOOD, Texas - Going to the gym during lunch and after work just got easier for many Fort Hood soldiers as the Harvey Gym reopened its doors to the public.
The 2nd "Black Jack" Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, which sponsors the gym, held the gym reopening ceremony Feb. 16.
"This, in my view, and the 2nd Brigade and 1st Cav., is going to be the premier fitness facility on Fort Hood," said Col. John Peeler, the commander of the Black Jack Brigade.
The gym will host numerous classes including aerobics and functional fitness.
These classes are not just going to be for 2nd Brigade Soldiers or 1st Cav. soldiers, anyone on Fort Hood can come, explained Peeler.
"The spouses of soldiers that serve here on Fort Hood can go through functional fitness classes here," he continued. "It is absolutely popular and growing by leaps and bounds."
"We want this to be the epicenter of where all that happens," he said.
The gym will also be the home of the 1st Cav. Div. physical therapy clinic.
"It's what we need to get our soldiers fixed who might be broken for one reason or another or are coming off of an injury," said Peeler. "This is where the patient care takes place."
The gym reopened after being closed for major remodeling.
Workout areas, bathrooms, showers, the physical therapy room and office spaces were all renovated, explained the facility manager, Sheree Broomfield.
The gym also now has a large area for functional fitness-the only designated area of its type on the post-and will have a functional fitness trainer there to assist with exercises.
"This is a huge improvement," said Spc. Gregorio Reyes, an Austin, Texas, native and an aviation operations specialist with the Black Jack Brigade. "It has more equipment, more efficient spacing and looks a lot nicer."
Reyes said he does a lot of exercises that involve free weights and kettle bells.
"They have everything here that I need," he continued. "They also have a lot more.space to do those types of exercises."
The Harvey Gym is located on the corner of 73rd and Old Ironsides in building number 31006.
