FORT HOOD, Texas — Soldiers of the 4th Squadron “Longknife”, 3rd Cavalry Regiment attended a ribbon cutting ceremony, Feb. 1, marking the beginning of a new relationship with South Belton Middle School.
The ceremony served as an introduction for unit leaders and faculty members, and was an opportunity for soldiers to tour the new facility.
“A relationship such as this will be a great opportunity for us to give back to the community for supporting us and our families thru our many deployments,” said 1st Lt. Joshua Ruskiewicz, the program manager for the squadron.
The program will assist faculty members by providing about 10 volunteer soldiers per week as mentors to share their knowledge and life experiences with the students.
“More than 700 students attend our school. Of them, 69 percent come from a low social economic level or a single-parent household,” said Deborah Aldridge, the school’s site director for Communities in Schools.
CIS is a non-profit organization dedicated to impacting the lives of children.
The unit’s commitment in this program will hopefully bridge the gap in many of the students’ lives by providing positive role models for them to look up to, said Aldridge.
“Their presence here should have a powerful effect on the students, and they won’t even realize it,” said Aldridge.
Soldiers will spend time with students outside of the classroom during the lunch period. Future mentorship will include academic tutoring, athletic coaching and activity supervision.
“Our main goal is to give students a reason to come to school, as well as keeping the students from dropping out,” said Aldridge.
The ceremony marks the beginning of a new relationship and paves the way for future opportunities for the 3rd Cavalry Regiment to give back to the community of Belton.
“If we can make a difference in these kids’ lives, then it will all be worth it,” said Ruskiewicz.
