BAGRAM AIR FIELD, Afghanistan — The Korean Vocational Training Center held its third annual entrance ceremony on Bagram Air Field, March 7.

The ceremony welcomed a class of 137 Afghans from Parwan, Kapisa and Nangarha provinces. Training for the class began, March 8, at the Korean Vocational Training Center.

“This center was established to train young Afghan students and to get them jobs,” said Dr. Deok-Soo Kong, Korean Vocational Training Center director.

The training center allows Afghans citizens to learn skilled trades in automotive repairs, construction, electricity, welding and computers. After graduating the center helps Afghans find jobs in their vocation.

Since the opening two years ago, the center has successfully trained and helped more than 180 students find jobs, said Kong. This year he hopes to have another 137 students added to that number.

“My dear students, if you train hard under the guidance of the professors and teachers, you will receive a good job and have good quality of skills in your major field when you graduate from KVTC,” said Kong.

The Korean Vocational Training Center provides Afghans the tools necessary to rebuild their infrastructure, support their families and develop their future.

“This [center] contributes positively to the prosperity of these people,” said guest speaker Canadian Army Brig. Gen. Karl D. McQuillan, Regional Command-East deputy commanding general. “What they will learn here in the coming year will prepare them for a productive and prosperous future that will benefit their family, their community and their nation.”

Before the Afghan students could begin, they held up their right hands and recited the oath of the Korean Vocational Training Center, which is done for every new class.

One of the students that took that oath, Nasirul Haq Akvary, from Parwan province, is studying to become a vehicle mechanic to help more than himself.

“This is a good chance for me to help my family, our society and [Afghanistan’s] future,” said Akvary.

Akvary also wanted to give thanks.

“I appreciate the KVTC for having the programs to help the citizens of Afghanistan.”
