FORT BELVOIR, Va. — The Defense Logistics Agency has once again been ranked as one of the best places to work within the Department of Defense by the Partnership for Public Service.
In the organization’s 2011 Best Places to Work in the Federal Government survey, DLA placed higher than 60 percent of the 241 subcomponent agencies within DoD. DLA has placed high in the rankings consistently for the past several years, with its highest rankings coming from the categories measuring work-life balance and family-friendly workplace culture. The rankings are based on responses from more than 266,000 federal employees to the 2011 Office of Personnel Management’s Federal Employee Viewpoint Survey, which measures federal agencies in 10 workplace categories, including effective leadership, pay and employee commitment.
“We are extremely proud of our 2011 OPM Federal Employee Viewpoint Survey results and subsequent ranking in the Partnership for Public Services Best Places to Work,” said Brad Bunn, director of DLA Human Resources. “We want to be the employer of choice within DoD; that is our goal. We want employees to feel good about working at DLA at every stage in their career, from their first appointment to their retirement date. We know that providing a positive working environment for our employees will produce a more committed, dedicated and loyal workforce and, ultimately, better support to our warfighters.”
In the Family Friendly Culture and Benefits category, DLA ranked 41st out of 241 subcomponent agencies, and in the Work/Life Balance category, it ranked 53rd. DLA’s leaders have put a lot of effort into creating a work environment focused on a healthy work-life balance, Bunn said, and that effort has paid off as DLA continues to rank in the top 25 percent of all DoD agencies in those categories.
DLA also ranked 59th in the Training and Development category, which reflects the agency’s commitment to developing its employees and maintaining a quality workforce, Bunn said.
“We have initiated several programs in the past few years to ensure our commitment to helping our employees to achieve their professional and leadership goals,” he said. “Some of the programs included the Executive Leadership Development Program, the DLA Rotation Program, and the Career Mapping Program, just to name a few. These programs not only meet the needs of employees’ career goals, but assist in closing competency gaps, thus preparing a skilled and talented workforce for the future.”
Another area that DLA ranked high in was the Strategic Management category, Bunn noted. The agency’s score in this category has been improving over the years, thanks to efforts from the agency’s leaders to help employees understand how their missions and contributions link to the overall DLA mission, he said. He cited the example of the We Are DLA initiative, which helped unify the agency and provide a better-focused sense of mission.
“We believe this program assisted our employees and customers to better understand their role in the DLA mission,” Bunn said. “That observation is validated by a positive increase in score as well as an increase in our ranking in the workplace category of Strategic Management.”
Overall, DLA ranked 88th out of the 241 DoD agencies. Because of the agency’s consistently high ranking, officials at other DoD agencies have contacted DLA leaders to learn their secrets for improving the workplace environment and employee satisfaction, Bunn said.
