Bibliophiles connect at first Book Club for Adults

    Story by Cpl. Miranda Blackburn

CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. - The classic bibliophile is one who loves to read, admire and collect books. Bookworms everywhere lose themselves in new and astounding worlds as they delve into the characters created by wonderful authors. However, readers are often left with the desire to discuss the intriguing stories with others who know the tales as well as they do.

Book lovers aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune were able to do just that during the kick-off event of the Book Club for Adults, held at the Harriotte B. Smith Library, March 13.

“We have had adult book clubs on and off here at the base library but sometimes people move on, particularly here, so you lose people who come regularly,” said Jana Guitar, the supervisory library technician. “We haven’t had one here for the last couple of years so we decided to get another one up and running and see if we can keep it going.”

While March is Irish-American Heritage Month, the first novel on the list of books to read was “Minding Frankie” by Maeve Binchy.

“The story is set in a small close-knit community in Dublin, Ireland,” said Guitar. “A cast of delightful characters become involved with the job of taking care of a baby girl named Frankie. It is a story that deals with modern day, real-life issues, but [is] presented in a humorous, heart-warming manner that inspires as well as entertains.”

Minding Frankie, along with most other books on the future reading list, is available through different mediums including free download for devices such as tablets, personal computers or phones through the Navy General Library Program, which is available to Marines, sailors and their families on navy.lib.overdrive.com.

Many of the attendants of the book club were already avid readers but some were getting their feet wet for the first time.

“I actually don’t read a lot,” said Nicole Roman, an attendant of the discussion group. “I’m trying to get myself to read more. That’s why I came to the book club.”

Guitar added that the book club not only gives attendants a reason to read but also gives them a chance to socialize and meet other people.

“A lot of people read a book and they want to talk about it,” Guitar said. “When you have adults like this and they get together, they find out they have a lot in common.”

The next book club meeting will be held April 9 and will be discussing a book handed down from Headquarters Marine Corps called “The Lucky One” by Nicholas Sparks.

The novel encompasses the story of Marine Logan Thibault, who carries a picture of a woman he’s never met because it brings him good luck, but when he sets out to find the woman, he is met with unexpected circumstances surrounding his new love and his shrouded past.

“Book clubs are important because people have ideas,” said Guitar. “They read something and they want to talk about it and they want to enlarge on that and hear what other people have to say and also voice what they think.”

The club requires preregistration and is slated to take place on the second Monday of every month, except on holidays, at the Harriotte B. Smith Library.
