SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. - A former resident of New Bedford, Mass., Master Sgt. Steven Hart earned the title of Air Mobility Command’s First Sergeant of the Year for 2011, here, March 21, 2012, during an announcement at AMC’s annual awards banquet.

Hart was selected from a group of four finalists for the award. He will compete next in the first sergeant category to be one of the U.S. Air Force’s 12 Outstanding Airmen of the Year.

Hart is the first sergeant for the 628th Security Forces Squadron at Joint Base Charleston, S.C., and is currently deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom with the 387th Expeditionary Security Forces Squadron at a non-disclosed base in Southwest Asia.

In 2011, Hart led a 499-member joint person squadron through 63 deployments, three operational readiness exercise fly-away missions and an operational readiness inspection.

Additionally, Hart built and managed a cross-fit program, developed a fitness foundation course and headed the 628th Air Base Wing’s “Festival of Fitness” planning committee.

According to his biography, Hart was born in Montreal, Canada. He obtained his U.S. citizenship in 1992. While attending high school in New Bedford, Mass., “he excelled across the spectrum of sports and other activities.”

In 1994, Hart enlisted in the Air Force and departed for basic military training 18 days after his high school graduation, the biography states. Upon completion of basic training, Hart began technical training as an air transportation specialist at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas. He was then assigned to RAF Lakenheath, where he was recognized as “Airman of the Quarter.”

Sgt. Hart’s next assignment was at the 65th Air Base Wing at Lajes Field, Azores, Portugal. After the Azores, he was then were assigned to Incirlik Air Base, Turkey, where he was twice recognized as “Airman of the Year” and earned the John L. After earning his staff sergeant stripes, Hart was assigned to Ramstein Air Base, Germany. While stationed there, he “continued to earn high praise, being selected as the 621st Air Mobility Group’s “Air Terminal Controller of the Year” and completed his first Community College of the Air Force degree.

In 2003, Hart was assigned to Pope Air Force Base, N.C., where he twice earned his squadron’s “Non-commissioned Officer of the Year” and as Pope Air Force Base’s 2003 “Transportation Non-commissioned Officer of the Year.” He also attended the Non-commissioned Officer Academy at Maxwell Gunter Air Force Base, Ala., where he was a distinguished graduate.
