HELMAND PROVINCE, Afghanistan – The Seabees of Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 11 gathered today to recognize Construction Mechanic 2nd Class Mark Paystrup of Levan, Utah, as the Task Force Stethem Warfighter of the Month.
Task Force Stethem is charged with overseeing all engineering operations in southern Afghanistan and directs the efforts of NMCB-11, NMCB-7, and the U.S. Army’s 980th Engineering Battalion.
The Warfighter of the Month award recognizes one individual’s significant contributions to Task Force Stethem’s mission in Afghanistan to provide highly responsive horizontal and vertical engineering forces from all services in support of the war fighting mission as well as improved governance and stability.
Paystrup was selected for the first Warfighter of the Month award issued by Task Force Stethem for his leadership of the NMCB-11 Light Shop. He was recognized for improving the productivity of his work center through mentorship and concern for the morale and well being of his crew. “It feels great to get this recognition, but I‘m just really proud of the crew I have,” said Paystrup.
Paystrup’s Light Shop maintains and repairs all light automotive equipment in the battalion, including armored cargo trucks, tractor trailers, and other transportation vehicles essential for the transportation of supplies and equipment to NMCB-11’s construction sites throughout southwest Afghanistan.
Capt. Kathryn A. Donovan, commodore of Task Force Stethem and the 22nd Naval Construction Regiment, presented Paystrup with a certificate of award, a commemorative plaque and one of Task Force Stethem’s newly designed command coins.
Task Force Stethem is named for Steel Worker 2nd Class Robert Stethem, a Seabee killed by terrorists during the 1985 hijacking of a commercial airline he was a passenger on.
NMCB-11 supports the Task Force’s mission by conducting general, mobility, survivability engineering operations, defensive operations, Afghan National Army partnering and detachment of units in combined joint operations area – Afghanistan in order to enable the neutralization of the insurgency and support improved governance and stability operations. NMCB-11 is homeported in Gulfport, Miss.
