CAMP ARIFJAN, Kuwait - On Oct. 20, 2011, members of the 1204th Aviation Intermediate Maintenance Company, Alabama National Guard, joined forces with the 1108th Theater Aviation Sustainment Maintenance Group, Mississippi National Guard, at Patton Army Airfield, Camp Arifjan, Kuwait. Both units are conducting operations in support of Operation New Dawn and Operation Enduring Freedom.

The mission of both units is to perform complex, complicated maintenance on military helicopters, thereby sustaining the readiness and mission capability of combat aviation units throughout southwest Asia. The 1204th and the 1108th routinely overhaul, modify and modernize aircraft systems.

The Mississippi and Alabama Army National Guard enjoy a storied history as a result of having served together on numerous occasions. The 12th Alabama and the 12th Mississippi fought side-by-side in Gen. Robert E. Rodes’ brigade during the Battle of Seven Pines in the early summer of 1862. In 2005, on the heels of Hurricane Katrina, Mississippi and Alabama joined forces to provide relief to the citizens of both states suffering from the devastation caused by our nation’s costliest natural disaster. More recently, in April 2011, the two National Guard forces united again to respond to the ruinous winds and deadly tornadoes that destroyed several highly populated areas in both states.

The ultimate bond between the Mississippi and Alabama Army National Guard is reinforced and strengthened as together, the 1108th TASMG and the 1204th AVIM continue to provide superior aviation maintenance to units from all across America. Their union is based on some of the finest southern traditions and the lack of State lines in this desert environment is readily apparent as these two units work together in harmony to meet the needs of our nation.
