Seabees Participate in Solid Curtain-Citadel Shield

    GULFPORT, MISSISSIPPI, UNITED STATES

Story by Petty Officer 2nd Class Brandi Tomich

    Naval Construction Battalion 27

GULFPORT, Miss. - While most Seabees assigned to Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 27 received combat training during a Field Training Exercise at Camp Shelby, Miss., March 10 - 21, members who remained behind at the battalion’s temporary headquarters in Gulfport, Miss., received some unexpected training as well.

The nine Seabees who provided administrative support from Naval Construction Battalion Center Gulfport became participants in the anti-terrorism/force protection exercise Solid Curtain-Citadel Shield 2012.

The annual security training exercise was conducted on naval bases nation-wide from March 19-24. SC-CS is designed to assess and improve the Navy Security Forces ability to rapidly respond to simulated terrorist activities and threats to the installation or unit.

“As guests on the base, it was important to confirm our professionalism by responding quickly and thoroughly,” said Chief Equipment Operator Steve Luxon. “We took all necessary measures to comply with the changing threat conditions.”

Scenarios for the exercise were created to be as realistic as possible and included such threats as vehicle born improvised explosive devices, mass causality emergencies, unauthorized surveillance operations, bombs, and active shootings.

“It was great to work more closely with base personnel,” Luxon said. “And it provided us an opportunity to enhance our own capabilities.”

In addition to training and evaluating security forces, the SC-CS exercise helped raise threat awareness among sailors, civilians, and local communities.

“Without regular drills, it’s easy to become complacent,” Reinshmidt said. “We were definitely reminded that security measures are critical to base operations.”

Solid Curtain-Citadel Shield is the largest force protection exercise in the Navy. It was introduced in 1999 and is coordinated by U.S. Fleet Forces Command and Commander, Navy Installations Command.

NMCB 27 is a reserve battalion based out of Westover Air Reserve Base in Chicopee, Mass.
