VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Marine Corps Gunnery Sgt. Lee James Bruno, who a native of Plattsburgh, N.Y., and six other Marines from Marine Corps Security Cooperation Group returned home from a seven-month deployment to the Republic of Georgia at the end of last month.
Bruno served as the senior enlisted adviser for this deployment, which supported the 5th rotation of Georgia Deployment Program-International Security Assistance Force. GDP-ISAF is a United States European Command directed program, which is lead by U.S. Marine Corps Forces, Europe that trains and equips Republic of Georgia infantry battalions to serve alongside Marines in Afghanistan.
The Peru Junior and Senior High School class of 1993 graduate played a key role for the Georgia Training Team by serving as a special adviser to the officer-in-charge of the unit on all matters pertaining to the training of the Georgians and also for the morale and welfare of the Marines directly supporting the program.
The Georgia Training Team provides the coordination and support element to the GDP-ISAF instructors throughout a Georgian infantry battalion's training cycle. They also provide liaison between U.S. and Georgian forces in order better facilitate the training efforts of the GDP-ISAF program.
Also on the deployment were Maj. Joshua Anderson, officer-in-charge, Capt. Shawn Rickroad, operations officer, Gunnery Sgt. William Brown, communications chief and native of Los Angeles, Staff Sgt. Beau Mattioda, training chief, Sgt. Gordon Paige, logistics chief and native of Westminster, Mass., and Sgt. Nicholas Shisler, training clerk.
Bruno’s father Lanny Bruno currently lives in Port Kent, N.Y., and his mother Linda Bruno still resides in the Plattsburgh, N.Y., area.
Some of Gunnery Sgt. Bruno’s military awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with a combat “V” for valor device and he has also received the Combat Action Ribbon on four separate occasions.
Marine Corps Security Cooperation Group is the lead component for the planning, coordination, and execution of GDP-ISAF.
Marine Corps Security Cooperation Group is a unit the specializes in conducting security cooperation training and events in support of regional Marine Force headquarters and the GDP-ISAF training program is the largest and longest mission to date.
