ZABUL PROVINCE, Afghanistan – Nawbahar district Afghan National Army soldiers and Afghan National Police members found five insurgent weapons caches in Petaw Kalay village, Shinkai district, April 2.
The Afghan National Security Forces element, along with members of coalition special operations forces and Nawbahar district’s governor and Chief of Police, responded to an intelligence report indicating insurgents used nearby orchards to conceal weapons caches.
The team recovered nine anti-personnel mines, two rifles, three rocket-propelled grenade rounds, more than 300 rounds of small-arms ammunition, rifle magazines, improvised explosive device components, tactical vests, radio antennas and wires.
After the cache recovery, the district governor spoke with villagers about security concerns in the region and the possibility of bringing the Afghan Local Police program to Petaw Kalay.
“The cache recovery demonstrated the capability of Nawbahar district ANSF to independently plan and conduct operations,” said a coalition SOF member. “The cache recovery degraded the insurgents’ ability to follow through with attacks in the region.”
