Insurgent IEDs kill two and injure one in Uruzgan province

URUZGAN PROVINCE, AFGHANISTAN – Insurgent improvised explosive devices killed two villagers and injured another after two separate IEDs detonated in Chora district, March 31 and April 2.

Also on March 31, an IED injured a civil engineer working for the Gizab Civil Maintenance Team.

The man, along with Gizab Afghan Local Police members and other civilians, were traveling from Tarin Kowt district to Gizab district when an IED struck a vehicle in the convoy. When the man and an ALP member exited their vehicle, a second IED exploded, injuring the engineer.

The ALP member transported the man to a local coalition special operations forces camp where a medical team rendered first aid and moved him to another location for higher-level care.

Medical personnel expect the man to make a full-recovery.

On April 2, an explosion occurred approximately two kilometers from coalition SOF and ALP members conducting a key leader engagement with Deh Merdad village elders.

A combined element of ALP members and Afghan National Army Special Forces soldiers investigated the scene and determined either a pressure-plate IED or an anti-personnel mine caused the explosion and killed an Afghan man and woman.

Intelligence reports indicate insurgents littered the area with IEDs and mines. An Afghan National Security Force explosive ordnance disposal team and coalition SOF previously discovered two anti-personnel mines in the same area March 4.

The Kalach ALP commander said insurgents issued a decree restricting villagers from traveling in the area where the explosion occurred.

“The local populace is extremely angry about the killing of innocent villagers and the decree,” said a coalition SOF member. “This is another example of the insurgents' complete disregard for human life and their continued attempt to deny the people of Afghanistan their basic freedoms.”
