FORT STEWART, Ga. – Junior Reserved Officers’ Training Corps students from Swainsboro High School and Emanuel County Institute toured the complex for the 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, April 5, to learn about life in the Marne Division on Fort Stewart, Ga.

“Vanguard” Soldiers from various battalions put their vehicles, weapons and expertise on display for the students in the 3rd Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 4th IBCT motor pool at the start of the tour.

“It was a good experience for the kids to come out and actually look at some of what we do,” said Spc. Lillian D. Fay, a native of Belvedere, Ill.

The military police soldier, with Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 4-3 Brigade Special Troops Battalion, 4th IBCT, was on-hand to show students the vehicle she and fellow military police soldiers operate in combat, the M1117 Armored Security Vehicle.

Fay said it’s important for high school students to meet soldiers and learn about Army equipment before they decide to enlist in the Army.

Pfc. Ben L. Root, a cavalry scout with Troop B, 6th Squadron, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 4th IBCT, agreed with Fay and said the tours give young people a head’s up on the Army experience.
“It exposes [students] to what [they] will be using if [they] choose a career in the Army,” Root said.

The Dubuque, Iowa, native, who showed students some of the equipment he uses as a cavalry scout, said that interacting with the students was a rewarding experience.

“The main aspect that everyone sees about the military is all the action-oriented stuff,” Root said. “It’s cool to actually get someone in one of our motor pools, with our equipment, and show them kind of what the day to day is [like].”
