    FORWARD OPERATING BASE MIRWAIS, AFGHANISTAN

    319th Mobile Public Affairs Detachment

FORWARD OPERATING BASE MIRWAIS, Afghanistan – Daily operations require a lot of effort from the Australian and U.S. soldiers and sailors, and keeping a fit mind and body requires a significant amount of energy.

With the majority of patrols being conducted on foot, proper hydration and nutrition keep the ground units on track. The cooks at Forward Operating Base Mirwais are an integral piece to the overall success of operations.

“We work long hours but keep the team fed,” said Cpl. Gavin Peterson of Gosford, New South Wales, mess sergeant for Mentoring Task Force 4. “It's a good feeling to know that we are part of the unit's success.”

The mess team provides three hot meals a day to the troops which keeps them working from dusk until dawn.

Being a forward location, many of the amenities seen at larger larger bases such as 24-hour snack and mess operations are not available which makes the meals mean that much more.

“It's a great experience,” said Pfc. Mario Hall , Alpha Troop, 1-14th CAV, Fort Lewis-McChord, Wash. “It makes me feel good to know that I affect the morale of the soldiers.”

The dining facility, much like the rest of the base, is located on a hillside in a former Afghan government operations building. Stoves, refrigeration units, and shelving have been placed in strategic locations to make their jobs as efficient as possible.

“I have learned more about my job during my time here in country, than I ever would have learned back in the states,” said Hall. “I love what I do. This also gives me the opportunity to be creative in making meals.”

When asked about the mess, soldiers of Mentoring Task Force, Engineer Detachment, feel that it is very good and that it would compete against most any other location they have visited.
