CAMP VIRGINIA, Kuwait- Attempting a half marathon only a few days after arriving in Kuwait may seem unheard of to some people, but for soldiers of the Illinois Army National Guard's 444th Chemical Company, it was an opportunity to test personal limitations.
Based in Galesburg, Ill., the 444th Chemical Company arrived here to manage Camp Virginia a little over a week ago. On April 15, a few days later, 20 unit soldiers ran a half marathon.
This was the first half marathon that any of the Illinois soldiers had completed, and they all had similar goals in mind.
Sgt. Ashley Lasiowski, who arrived with the company a few days prior to the over 13-mile race, was motivated by the challenge it presented.
“I wanted to test myself and accomplish something I have never done before," said Lasiowski, a resident of West Chicago, Ill.
Staff Sgt. Stephanie McCurry of Abingdon, Ill. said she's always wanted to run a half-marathon.
“Why not do it here?" she said.
Spc. Anastasia Evans, of Alton, Ill., said she's never run that far before.
"I just want to finish the whole thing,” she said. “I wanted to try and run it in two and a half hours.”
When asked how they would celebrate reaching their individual goals, the runners also had similar answers.
“Ice cream and cake,” Evans said.
“A big bowl of ice cream," McCurry said.
Twenty other Soldiers dedicated their time to volunteering to help make the race a success. The 444th Chemical Company is scheduled to be in Kuwait for the next nine months.
