NAPLES, Italy - Yesterday in the port of Den Helder, Holland, the international staff of the Standing NATO Maritime Group 1 and the crews of the warshisp HNLMS De Ruyter and FGS Rheinland Pfalz received the NATO medal for their recent deployment in Operation Active Endeavour.
After the ships moored in the Dutch naval base Den Helder, Vice Adm. Matthieu Borsboom, chief of naval operations, Royal Netherlands Navy, and Vice Adm. Andreas Krause, German navy, deputy commander Allied Maritime Command Naples, welcomed the crews and carried out the award ceremony.
Operation Active Endeavour was launched in 2001 following the terrorist attacks against the United States. It has since evolved into a comprehensive counterterrorism operation that is based on the collection and analysis of information of the maritime traffic and on the surveillance conducted by NATO naval and air units. Surveillance by military assets is – at irregular intervals – concentrated into specific areas of the Mediterranean with "surge operations" during which larger scale sweeps are conducted.
