VIRGINA BEACH, Va. - Pataskala, Ohio, native, and Watkins Memorial High School class of 2004 graduate, Sgt. Kyle M. Campbell was presented with a Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal in lieu of second award during a formation at Marine Corps Security Cooperation Group aboard Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek – Fort Story, Va., May 8.

Campbell was awarded this medal for his exemplary performance of duties while serving as operations section plans non-commissioned officer and Defense Readiness Reporting System clerk for the unit from June 2010 until May 2012.

During this period, Campbell spearheaded the coordination of sourcing and funding of all personnel deploying and redeploying to the Republic of Georgia in support of Georgia Deployment Program – International Security Assistance Force, which is the command’s most high profile mission.

Campbell also conducted training to more than 150 personnel in support of GDP-ISAF, subsequently managing the detailed documentation surrounding the sourcing and training of each iteration, and ensuring continual process improvement.

Campbell, who entered active military service in June 2004 previously served as a squad leader with 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, Camp Pendleton, Calif., from May 2008 to May 2010.

During this period of time, Campbell, deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and prior to that he served as a Squad Leader with 2nd Battalion 9th Marine Regiment in Camp Lejeune, N.C., with whom he deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Campbell's parents John and Teena Campbell still reside in Pataskala, Ohio.

The Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal is awarded for outstanding achievement or meritorious service not of a nature that would otherwise warrant awarding a commendation medal. Since the achievement medal is designated as an award solely for junior personnel, it is generally only awarded to officers in the pay grade of O-4 and below and enlisted personnel below the grade of E-7. Award authority rests with local commanders, granting a broad discretion of when and for what action the achievement medal may be awarded.

Marine Corps Security Cooperation Group is a unit in the Marine Corps that coordinates, manages, executes, and evaluates United States Marine Corps Security Cooperation programs and activities, to include assessment, planning, related education and training, and adviser support to ensure unity of effort in building Partner Nation Security Forces capacity and capability in order to facilitate USMC and regional Marine Forces component support to combatant commanders security cooperation objectives.
