ADANA, Turkey - Patrons of the fitness center will soon have more options to work up a sweat as a new functional fitness room is scheduled for completion this coming March.
The new functional fitness room is designed for those who enjoy many of the newer fitness programs involving high-intensity workouts. For airmen or family members who usually frequent an off-base facility for specialty equipment associated with these workouts, this room was designed especially for them, said Earnest Fasoldt, fitness center manager.
"Since 2005, these functional movement type exercise programs have become extremely popular not only in the civilian sector but with the military, as well," Fasoldt said. "Our functional fitness room was designed and is being equipped to provide additional strength and conditioning opportunities not historically available in Air Force fitness centers."
The idea for the functional fitness room is a product of suggestions from patrons of the fitness center and research done by the center's staff on fitness trends. End-of-the-year funds facilitated the construction of the room, which began in January. The equipment will be set up as soon as it is completed.
"We've already received the vast majority of the equipment, and our customers can look forward to using kettle bells, wall balls, pull-up and squat platforms, bumper plates, a climbing rope and a few other surprises," Fasoldt said.
In addition to the new room, the fitness center is planning many events for the upcoming spring and summer months to encourage physical activity and offer something new for the Incirlik community.
Below is a list of scheduled events for the upcoming months:
Feb. 24 - Basketball skills contest begins at 9 p.m. at the fitness center. Sign up at DSN 676-6086.
Feb. 25 - Winterathlon 10K run, 15K bike ride and shooting at the skeet range begins at 8 a.m.
March 17 - Sprint duathlon begins at 8 p.m.
March 23 - Wallyball tournament begins at 9 p.m. Register teams before March 22
April 7 - Cross-country relay at the golf course at 8 a.m.
April 14 - Powerlifting competition begins at 9 p.m.
April 23 - Late night softball tournament begins at 9 p.m.
Master Sgt. Roy Robinson, fitness center non-commissioned officer in charge, encourages airmen, family members and civilians to visit the center to learn about upcoming events or to reach their personal goals.
"[Anyone] is more than welcome to attend any of our classes we offer. We have a personal trainer if they would like to have a one-on-one session," he said. "Sports that will be coming in the spring are softball, soccer and golf. We expect soccer to start in April, golf in May and softball to start in June."
