CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. - Every year, personnel throughout Marine Corps Installations East are nominated for the Superior Performance in Ground Safety Award. This year, the prestigious accolade was given to Gunnery Sgt. Ryan R. Nosek while he was assigned as the Deployment Processing Command – East, Reserve Support unit officer and the Reserve Support officer in charge for the Individual Augment Pre-Deployment Cell.

Known as the Bull Dog award, it recognizes individuals who have made the most significant contribution to the Marine Corps Safety Program.

“The award was presented to the person with a great safety program, great initiative and outstanding service in the safety community who brings value and merit to that unit’s safety program,” said Ronald Sarmento, the deputy safety director for MCIEAST – Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune.

Over the past two years, Nosek made momentous contributions and has been instrumental in the area of unit safety and mishap prevention.

Utilizing skill, training and expertise as a primary marksmanship instructor, combat marksmanship trainer, range safety officer and marine corps combat instructor of water survival, Nosek has singlehandedly impacted the safe and effective live-fire training and combat water survival qualifications of more than 380 deploying Marines.

“He was recognized as an individual for going above and beyond his normal duties because being a safety officer is a collateral duty,” said Sarmento. “Any collateral duty safety officer can keep a program afloat. It takes that one person that goes above and beyond that sets the bench mark for the safety community who has a program that stands out.”

Nosek’s exceptional attention to detail, paramount concerns for the safety of all Marines on the range, and skill as a supervisor contributed to the safe execution of more than 20 live-fire M9 service pistol and M4 carbine rifle qualification courses, 20 M4 carbine Table III qualification courses, and 26 Marine Corps Combat Water Survival qualification courses without a single reportable injury or mishap.

He continuously searched for and implemented ways to improve his training curriculum while reducing personnel risk and injury in order to achieve all the critical range responsibilities.

“His desire, perseverance, and willingness to go beyond to make sure that all Marines (understood the safety program) is what really made him stand out above all of the other nominees,” said Sarmento. “He really took it to heart.”

Nosek planned, coordinated and implemented fundamental safety techniques, professional periods of instruction and practical application, into his command’s daily routine.

“His integrity, perseverance, quality of work, and steadfast dedication to operational safety put him head and shoulders above his peers,” said Col. Joseph J. Garcia, the Deployment Processing Command – East commanding officer.
