    WARDAK PROVINCE, Afghanistan – U.S. Army Spc. Junot M. LeGrandCochilus was born Sept. 27, 1977, in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. He enlisted in the U. S. Army in March 2010 as a 12B, combat engineer. Prior to joining the U.S. Army, he resided in Charlotte, N.C., where he graduated from Harp School in 2000. He then returned to Port-au-Prince, Haiti, to attend Faculte Linguistique Applique College from 2001 to 2003. He was killed by an improvised explosive device during a route clearance patrol in Wardak province while supporting Operation Enduring Freedom, May 2.

    On March 17, 2010, LeGrandCochilus entered the U.S.Army at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., where he completed Combat Engineer One Station Unit Training. Upon completion of his training, LeGrandCochilus was assigned to the 630th Route Clearance Company, 7th Engineer Battalion Fort Drum, N.Y.

    In October 2011, LeGrandCochilus deployed to Wardak orovince, Afghanistan with the 630th Route Clearance Company, in support of Operation Enduring Freedom 11-12. During the deployment, he served as a RG-31 Mine Resistant Ambush Protected vehicle driver for Route Clearance Patrol 44.

    LeGrandCochilus’ awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal (Posthumous), Purple Heart (Posthumous), National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, and NATO ISAF Medal. He was also awarded the Combat Action Badge.

    LeGrandCochilus is survived by his wife Marie Maude-Nester and daughter Ervely Cochilus, who are both currently residing in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. He is also survived by his father, Teagun Cochilus, and mother, Nelie Team, also in Haiti. He will be greatly missed but never forgotten by the soldiers of the 630th Route Clearance Company, 7th Engineer Battalion, 18th Engineer Brigade.
