GRAFENWOEHR, Germany — The 7th Army Non-commissioned Officer Academy (NCOA) in Grafenwoehr, Germany, is the oldest and largest NCO Academy in the U.S. Army. The 7th Army NCOA has been developing leaders for the U.S. Army, Europe (USAREUR) and its multinational partners for more than 60 years.

Through the NCOA’s high standards and commitment to excellence in training the soldiers of today’s NCO Corps, the 7th Army NCOA teaches soldiers the skills needed to be the tomorrow’s outstanding future leaders.

Training is not the only thing at the 7th Army NCOA recognized for excellence. The S4 section recently received top honors by being one of the Chief of Staff of the Army’s Supply Excellence Program winners, in the category I (B), at the USAREUR level for fiscal year 2012. NCOA’s S4 also competed at the Department of Army level in the same category and was awarded second place.

The Supply Excellence Award was conceived in 1984 at the Total Army Worldwide Supply Conference and its goal is to recognize supply excellence at the various unit and organizational levels. The competition for the award is a yearly event, beginning with the nomination of units by category with each unit being inspected by their higher headquarters. With each successive advance towards a higher level, the unit receives another inspection, culminating at the Department of the Army level.

Army Staff Sgt. Precious Knight, S4 Non-commissioned Officer in charge of supply at the NCOA is responsible for all aspects of supplying the academy and it’s attending soldiers during their training. Knight has been working at the NCOA for more than a year, but has been a serving 92Y (Supply Specialist) for nearly 11 years.

The S4 office has five soldiers in total including Knight and she is quick to point it out that the award is for the entire S4 section. “This is not an award for me alone; this award was given to the academy for what we have achieved as a team.”

Inspections are based on a unit’s supply personnel’s ability to perform their duties as supply managers, in accordance to Army Regulations. “This award is important to us because it shows to other supply personnel around the Army that we are doing it the right way,” Knight said.

Preparations for next year’s competition are already underway. Knight says she has nominated her higher headquarters to compete and is working with them to prepare for the competition. “This is an award that all 92Ys should strive to compete for.” Knight said.
