DAEGU, South Korea – Soldiers from the 19th Expeditionary Sustainment Command participated in chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear training at Camp Carroll May 24. The purpose of the training was to learn the skills necessary to help protect themselves and their battle buddies from a CBRN attack.
All soldiers who participated in the training were required to don their chemical protective masks and wear their Joint Service Lightweight Integrated Suit Technology which is a set of garments including overgarment, underwear, overboots and gloves worn over the Army Combat Uniform that provides protection against CBRN and battlefield contaminations.
In groups of ten, soldiers donned their protective masks and entered into the chamber. Once inside the small room, soldiers hopped in place to determine whether their gas masks and JSLISTs were properly worn.
Next, they were told to completely unmask, hold their breath and close their eyes, all while being exposed to CS gas. Finally, they were told to shout “Team 19, Hooah” before getting out of the chamber.
“It was not too bad, and I am glad that I did it,” said Pfc. Lee Dong-hyun, 19th ESC Equal Opportunity assistant. “The training really built confidence in [my] protective mask that it really works and how important it is to have good maintenance on it.”
